The guys in my office know, and it has now become part of our lexicon, that I often talk about “moving the needle”. These are the things that matter. The things that propel our businesses or our careers forward. They are usually the things we don’t want to do (the tough phone call we need to make, the marketing piece we don’t want to finish, etc.) but they matter. They change the momentum and move you toward the goal.

My simple strategy is to carry a note card (we had some nice ones printed with our logo so they can be used in a variety of ways… ) that I use as a quick to do list. On the top I write “WMN” (obviously the acronym for “what moves the needle”) and then I write the 2-3 most important things I can do today to move the needle.

Amazing simplicity… amazing results if you follow through.
