A few years ago, I built a valuable little spreadsheet on my computer with several tabs. Each tab houses a power list. My top 3 are titled: Biggest Names, Biggest Opportunities, and Biggest Ideas. They matter.

Biggest Names

A list of the people I think are most likely to move the needle for me. You know who these people are. They are the rockstars in your network who are 1-3 degrees from you. If you know them already, figure out how you may collaborate in 2011. If you don’t know them, make a plan to know them.

Biggest Opportunities

A list of the “angles” and approaches you haven’t tapped. The guy you know who could get your product on Oprah. Your VC contact who wants to fund something in your space. These are the things you might want to brainstorm a “what if” and turn them in to action.

Biggest Ideas

This is list of the products, projects, non-profits, startups, and BHAGs that would change your life. This list should inspire you. Some should be beyond reach. Stare at it today. Add to it. Then tomorrow (New Year’s Day), resolve to attack something or all of the things on there.


Make the lists. Keep them active, and take action on them. If you took significant action against 10% of the things on your list, life might look pretty interesting.
